Following Standards

4th, May 2014

The great thing about the PHP world is the attitude of the people in it.
(Apart from beating each other up over tabs and spaces)

The bad thing has been, that being so welcoming, there have been lots of novices. This means lots of different styles for architecturing systems, writing code and documentaiton.

But true to its attitude, there is agreat agreement in finally setting industry wide standards for PHP coding. The standards have been defined by the leading developers of the majority of the worlds most popular frameworks and systems. The majority is such that they won't be competing with another 10 that exist already, it has become the de-facto standard.

In my opinion, it will not be long until we see the next generation of systems built on top of these standards. To their credit, Drupal and Joomla are members of FIG , but unfortunately not much news on the Wordpress end. It will take a while to be fully compliant, as it is always harder to re-engineer code to conform to a standard than it is to follow it from the beggining.
